Burma Maru Expedition

"Expedition Burma Maru" was set to solve the mystery of the long lost Japanese cargo steamer Burma Maru.

The Burma Maru (4585brt) was sunk by the submarine USS Swordfish on the 12th of June 1942 during WW2 some 60 nm south-west of Koh Rong, Cambodia.

After a long but very exiting search we are proud to say that she has been found on 21st of February 2017 after being lost for almost 75 years!

The liveaboard trip was great fun and it has been a pleasure to dive with such a professional team. We believe that this trip came with some records as well; we think that it has been the first time that Trimix - a mixture of oxygen, nitrogen and helium - has been blended and used for diving in Cambodia.

The wreck of the Burma Maru is laying upright at around 67 m depth. The upper part of the wreck lays in a depth of 53 m.

We are already planning our next visit to dive her again!

The expedition was organized and executed by:

Davy Jones Locker (http://www.davyjoneslocker.asia/)

Koh Tao Tec Divers (https://www.kohtaotecdivers.com/)

and The Dive Shop Cambodia.

Dive Team:

Dennis Funke, Tim Lawrence, Ivan Karadzic, Oliver Zaiser, Mikko Paasi and Leon Webber.

Meet Alex, our new PADI Instructor!

"I started to dive in Vietnam in 2014 and instantly fell in love with the underwater world. After furthering my dive education in Europe I returned to Vietnam to complete my Divemaster internship and continued working as a Divemaster during my university summer vacations. With diving, I knew I had found my passion, and after graduating I decided to take the next step to become a dive instructor in Bali. My love for diving brought me to Cambodia and The Dive Shop, where I have the opportunity to teach my passion to others, work with some great people and instructor,s while living and diving from the incredible island of Koh Rong Samloem."

Meet Stephanie, Conservation Manager

Meet Stephanie, our conservation manager and ‪divemaster‬ trainee.

"I came to ‪Cambodia‬ in May 2014 as part of my worldwide travel experience and was so captivated by the beauty of Cambodia I had to stay longer. I began my ‪diving‬ course late 2014, breath taken by the ‪underwater‬ world I decided to create my own personal marine project; documenting what was present at each dive site so we could make the diving experience even more fascinating by knowing what you are looking at. Over time this lead to recording both terrestrial and marine species and late 2015 a partnership with the ‪diveshop‬ was made to help protect the islands beauty that so many take for granted. Together we created ‘‪The Wonderful Wildlife of Samloem‬’ and we are striving to conserve the islands marine and terrestrial ‪wildlife‬ in balance with community living and education."

A new temple house for Dive Shop and Happa

The other day we have bought a new temple house for our spirits living at the Sunset Beach.

After we have brought the house to the island our staff made us aware that we can not just place it into the garden as the exact location as well as the direction where it is looking to has to be determined by monks. When we called the local Pagoda in Sihanoukville we found out that the Ajah, the person who is responsible for finding a good day and the exact blessings, is getting seasick easily and refused to travel to our island.

Luckily our girls working in the office have found a way to lure him to the island to bless the Happa Garden Resort and The Dive Shop and also send some good prayers for our boats, staff and guests.
